Illustrious
patronage…
The bon vivant Gustave Flaubert loved this restaurant
and its atmosphere.Whenever he came to Nogent, this lover of words
and wonderful food constantly on the look-out for authenticity,
was a regular patron of the Cygne de la Croix.Indeed, he mentioned
the former staging inn in “L’Education Sentimentale”
(his best-selling novel published in 1869) in his inimitable style.
What better publicity could one dream of in the 16th century
?
From
the 16th century…
Before the great Romantic author and the galaxy of artists who
likewise made this place famous in the 19th and 20th centuries,
the grapevine had already worked very well.
From the 16th century, this, the oldest establishment in Nogent
, was a very popular stopover for travellers
on their way to the Holy Land, as well as pilgrims on their
way to Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle. Travellers would
stop off for a few days’ rest in this establishment renowned
for its hospitality.
Over the centuries, who can say how many stagecoaches have pulled
up before the square porch at number 22 which gives onto the
rue des Ponts, one of the two entrances to this Auberge occupying
an entire block ? |
